The big AI photography opportunity no one is talking about
AI brings real risk and real opportunity to photography — but the biggest opportunity isn't the one everyone is chasing.
AI photography creates plenty of opportunities for brands — but the biggest one isn't what most people assume. From generated imagery to AI-retouched portraits, artificial intelligence is reshaping every stage of the photographic process, and businesses are understandably drawn to the obvious upside: cheaper, faster images.
The real opportunity, though, is paradoxically the opposite of that. It's the chance to build trust in a brand precisely by not using AI — by producing photography that audiences can trust to genuinely match their real-world experience of a business.
That distinction matters more than it used to. In the past, a photograph may or may not have been fully trustworthy — a flattering crop, a favourable angle, but still fundamentally real. AI-generated photography removes that ambiguity entirely: once an image can be synthesised rather than captured, the line between what's real and what's fabricated has never been more blurred, and audiences increasingly know it.
With AI photography, it's simply NOT trustworthy… it's no longer real.
That leaves businesses with a genuine choice. They can lean into AI and accept that their marketing may no longer be read as a reflection of reality, banking the cost savings and speed. Or they can adopt a more deliberate policy — using the growing public wariness of AI imagery as a reason to double down on producing photography that is verifiably, obviously real, and let that authenticity become a point of difference.
But it's not just an opportunity that AI creates for brands — it's an existential threat. It destroys trust in brand by conflating a lack of trust in AI with the brand itself, producing images that can never match a customer's actual experience. If what we see can't be trusted, how can the consumer trust the advertised brand experience? The very concept of brand is based on trust… it's why brands were created in the first place.
Remove trust in your images, and you destroy your brand.
The 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals businesses are the most trusted institutions, with politicians and the media least trusted. AI endangers that hard-won trust and will waste the opportunity that enables.
With the rush to embrace AI across the economy, the biggest opportunity for business is to be a brand people can trust. Shooting real people in real places that tell real stories is an important tool in that — and it's exactly what documentary-style corporate photography does best.
So by producing photography that's real, it is much easier to match client expectations, and ensure your brand is not tainted by the lack of trust in AI. To find out more about how I can create real stories using real people for your next corporate brand photography shoot, get in touch.
