Forestry England assignment makes for some great documentary style portraits!

Never pass up the opportunity to make a great Documentary style portrait!

It doesn't need to be complex with fancy lighting, it just needs to talk a little bit about the subject. Keeping it simple is the best approach.

I have talked a bit about the work I did for Forestry England, during which I was drawn to the diversity of fans. From posh folks with dalmatians… (you can see that image in my Forestry England gallery on my web site…) to aged rockers and new hipsters.

Shot very quickly on the Canon 5Dmk3 and the 35mm f2, this was the simplest of editorial portrait photography.

The overcast conditions meant that I had fairly easy light to work with, so that helped as it provided an even light. But what made it work was the good hearted and friendly nature of everyone who I approached.

Tip: to help with an editorial portrait, it's handy to have a soft reflector. You can get reflectors that fold up into a very small package and are easy to hand hold. This is faster than using fill flash as it's easy to pump a bit of fill into the face. In this case I didn't have a reflector so the light was entirely as presented.
