Or the time I spent chasing Nigel Farage for The Sunday Times. — Doug Marke insights

In June 2014, the Newark by-election drew national attention, although the local media gave it surprisingly little coverage on the ground.

I spent several days on assignment producing editorial photography for The Sunday Times, working alongside A. A. Gill during the week and then assigned to a watching brief on the final Saturday of the campaign — observing events as they unfolded rather than working to a fixed shot list.

With half the cabinet expected in the constituency, alongside Nigel Farage, I arrived early to secure a position. To my surprise, I was the only photographer present for much of the morning; the Nottingham Post and AFP only arrived later in the afternoon for a scheduled UKIP event.

Accompanied by a journalist, I was able to follow Farage closely and produce an exclusive set of pictures. A black and white edit from that set appears below.

The set also records the only person in Bingham to challenge Farage over his election material — a sixteen-year-old who questioned why the UKIP leaflet proposed prioritising benefits claimants for housing over working immigrants.

It was a story the local media ought to have covered, had they gone out into the field rather than waiting for it to be delivered to them.

All of the photographs were shot on the Canon 5Dmk3, using the 17–40L and the 85mm f/1.8.
